What
is STEP.com? The project is funded through the
National Science Foundations Urban Systemic Program,
which is a K-12 program for school divisions with more
than
20,000 students that promotes whole-system improvement
in
science and mathematics education.
|
 |
The
program is:
- helping
build the Newport News Public Schools teacher
workforce in mathematics and science
- integrating
technology into the teaching and learning of
science and mathematics
- designing
and implementing a school-based teacher education
program in mathematics and science
- promoting
the application of AVID study strategies to science
and math learning
- expanding
school-business partnerships to increase the
number of students equipped to enter a technolog-based
workforce

| Building
better teachers... A
key component of STEP.com is teacher training and
mentoring. By using the division's resources in
instruction, staff development and technology,
the project is working toward building math and
science teachers "technology toolkit" as
well as embedding research-based educational practices
that lead to student success. Key to this effort
are the project's science, math and technology
resource teachers. These individuals have in-depth
classroom and curriculum development experience,
which they share through peer coaching and co-teaching.
Resource teachers conduct dozens of inservice training
sessions and professional development workshops.
And, over the past year, the resource teacher team
has helped teachers integrate technology into the
classroom as well as expanded the STEP Web site,
which offers links to lesson plans, PowerPoints,
Webquests, and many other math, science and technology
online resources for teachers, students and their
families. |
...and
keeping them. With
a third of Newport News school division teachers
new to the classroom, and more than 40% of elementary
and secondary science and mathematics teachers
with fewer than three years of service, STEP.com
is focusing on helping this group hone its teaching
and technology skills. Project staff take part
in the division's New Teacher Academy, provide
training for first-year mathematics and science
teachers, and work through established mentoring
programs. Efforts to retain first-year science
and mathematics teachers at the targeted high school
were so successful that the retention rate increased
to almost 100 percent.
