Improving student learning skills. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a proven, nationwide program based on research about the behaviors of successful students that gives students the "academic capital" they need to succeed in school. AVID organizational, study and research skills are being integrated into all secondary science and mathematics classrooms; one mathematics and science teacher from each secondary school has received formal AVID program training. These teachers train their peers and work toward making these strategies standard classroom practice.  STEP.com resource teachers also work closely with teachers in aligning and enhancing mathematics and science curriculum and in analyzing achievement data. They have served on committees to develop the required quarterly assessments in mathematics
